Niranam is evidently an ancient port city, much favoured by commercial communities in Rome, Greece, the Mediterranean region etc as revealed by Biblical references. NELCYNDA is understood to be the parent name of Niranam. This name is mentioned in the works of the first century A.D viz. Pliny’s NATURALIS HISTORIA AND PERIPLUS OF THE ERITREAN SEA authored by an unknown seafarer. The apostle founded a church at Niranam in the name of St.Mary. This is one of the seven and a half churches he founded in Kerala.
